3 Reasons You May Need an Endodontic Treatment

When the tooth's nerve or the pulp becomes inflamed or infected, endodontic treatment or a root canal is typically required. They are also performed to save the tooth from an infection that affects the nerves from its roots. The treatment is effective in reducing the pain induced by the infection.

Endodontic treatment is designed to save the natural tooth by eliminating bacteria from the infected root canal. Infected pulp is removed during the treatment, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned, disinfected, filled, and sealed. Below, we list some of the essential reasons where an endodontic treatment is required.

  • Severe Decay: Also referred to as Tooth Decay, the bacteria inside the mouth produce acids that eat away the teeth. It can be challenging to identify decay, but common symptoms include sensitivity, pain, and infection. Once the decay has developed, the treatment should not be delayed.

  • Large Fillings: When a cavity is left untreated, it requires large fillings. Larger amounts of decay result in the removal of more of the tooth structure. Large fillings are necessary to fix this issue. However, this affects the structural integrity of a tooth, which increases the risk of a root canal treatment.

  • Cracked or Chipped Tooth: Minor cracked or chipped tooth can be repaired by using tooth-colored bonding material or by a Dental Crown being placed on top of the tooth. However, when the damage penetrates through the pulp, it requires an endodontic treatment to be fixed.
