What Is an Endodontist?

An endodontist is a dentist who underwent two or three additional years of training after completing dental school. This extra training helps them specialize in tooth pain, infections, and diseases. They are typically more qualified for procedures, such as root canals, than a general dentist.

The Job of an Endodontist:

The tooth is mainly made up of four components. The outer layer that you can see and touch is known as the enamel. Below the enamel is a hard layer known as dentin. The dentin covers a soft tissue known as the pulp. And below that is the root canal.

The pulp is the area that has nerves, connective tissues, and blood vessels. An endodontist's job is to diagnose and treat any issues related to the pulp of the teeth.

The pulp is a sensitive part and can be affected by various things such as traumatic injury to the tooth, gum infections, tooth decay, or repeated dental work. If the pulp is being affected, your dentist will likely recommend you see an endodontist.

Following are some of the reasons you may have to see an endodontist

  • If you suffer a tooth injury that causes the tooth to get dislodged from its socket
  • If your tooth is chipped or fractured due to an injury
  • If you have a bacterial infection that enters the pulp of the tooth through small openings caused by injury or tooth decay

If you need to find an endodontist and reside in Castlewood, Southglenn, Dove Valley, Denver Tech Center, Foxfield, Lone Tree, Cherry Creek, or Greenwood Village, consider visiting Syrpes & Pangborn in Centennial, CO, as soon as possible.
