Being told that you need a root canal can cause a certain level of anxiety. It is a procedure that involves removing the infected soft tissues inside the tooth, which are also known as the pulp. The bad reputation that root canals get can tempt you to delay your appointment.

However, the truth is that root canals aren’t as scary as people portray them as. Here are some things that you should be aware of before getting a root canal.

  • Root Canals Shouldn’t Be Too Painful
If thinking about the pain of undergoing the procedure is causing you to get nightmares, then relax. Root canals are designed to ease the pain, not cause it. You will also be given local anesthesia that will numb the tooth and the area surrounding it. You will still suffer some discomfort, but it won’t be nearly as much as most people hype it up to be.
  • You Can’t Get Away With Just Taking Antibiotic
When you are scared of getting a root canal, you may feel tempted to believe that antibiotics could be used as an alternate treatment. However, since antibiotics only travel through the blood, they cannot reach the pulp infections located within the root canal system. Hence, they are useless when it comes to treating the pulp.
  • You May Experience Soreness Afterwards
The procedure in itself is almost painless, but you may experience some sensitivity or soreness for a few days afterward. This can be dealt with simple pain relief medication. Consult your dentist for some over-the-counter or prescription medication that is right for you. You will also have to protect your teeth during this time by making sure you don’t bite or chew anything hard. Even while eating soft food, make sure to chew it with the other side of the mouth. This will not only help ease the pain but will ensure that the root canal heals appropriately.
