5 Common Causes of Tooth Loss

There are many causes of tooth loss, both by natural and more forceful means. Here we will discuss the most common causes of tooth loss and suggest some tips on how to make sure you keep your natural teeth healthy and intact.

5 Common Causes of Tooth Loss

Below are the most common causes of losing teeth:

  1. Major tooth decay – Serious dental cavities and tooth decay can harm a tooth’s structure so severely that the teeth are more likely to break, crack, or fall out simply from chewing or biting.
  2. Gum disease – Unhealthy gum tissue can eventually lead to problems with your teeth and the structures that keep them in place. In advanced and untreated cases of gum disease, the teeth will eventually loosen and fall out.
  3. Physical altercations – If you’re attacked or get into a fight, injuries are likely to occur. Some injuries to the face can result in the loss of a tooth or many teeth.
  4. Necessary extractions – When a tooth is infected so severely that it cannot be saved through root canal therapy, it may sometimes be necessary to have it surgically removed.
  5. Contact and combat sports – Contact sports like football and hockey, or combat sports like karate and boxing can result in major facial injuries that can include damage to the teeth or the loss of the teeth.

Preventing Premature Tooth Loss

  • Practice good oral hygiene; brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist every 6 months for a dental cleaning and a checkup.
  • Avoid using tobacco products
  • Wear mouth protection when playing combat or contact sports
  • Drink plenty of water to wash away bacteria and stay hydrated
