Are Root Canals Painful?

A woman suffering from tooth pain

Despite being one of the most common and simple dental procedures, a lot of people tend to associate root canals with pain. While it isn’t common to experience severe pain after a root canal, it is completely normal not to feel on top of your game soon after undergoing the treatment.

However, it is important to remember that the main purpose of a root canal treatment is to relieve you of pain. Therefore, it will be counterproductive if you experience a lot of pain during the treatment.

How Much Pain Does One Experience During a Root Canal?

While everyone has a different threshold for pain, on average, people experience mild to moderate pain during the treatment. Some soreness in the area after the treatment should also be expected. As you heal from the treatment, the area around the root canal may feel a bit tender and sore. Since the procedure requires you to keep your mouth open for a longer period, some people also experience a sore jaw afterward.

If you do experience severe pain after a root canal treatment, it may be a sign of some underlying issue and should be reported to your endodontist immediately.

Why Do People Believe Root Canals Hurt When They Don’t?

The reason most people tend to believe that root canals are painful is that they used to be a few decades ago. A lack of technology and proper anesthetics led to the treatment being uncomfortable and painful for most people.

However, there has been huge progress in technology since then. With modern dental technology and anesthetic, most people barely feel the treatment and experience mild symptoms afterward.
