Common Causes of Toothaches

Anyone who has teeth will eventually experience some tooth pain! Depending on the severity, toothaches can be pretty unbearable, and they’re known for being difficult to relieve and coming on quite suddenly.

Common Causes of Toothaches

Below are a few common reasons why you may be experiencing tooth pain:

  • Bruxism – Bruxism is the official name for grinding and clenching your teeth at night. As the teeth against one another, the enamel will cheap and wear down, causing sensitivity and pain. Wearing a nightguard to bed can alleviate the symptoms and prevent damage from being done to the teeth.
  • Gum Recession – If you’re too rough when you brush your teeth, your gums may begin to recede. As this happens, the roots of the teeth become exposed, causing sensitivity and pain. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently.
  • Dental Cavity – In the early stages of a cavity, you may not feel pain. But as the cavity is allowed to worsen, it will eventually reach the nerves of the tooth, causing sharp, sudden pain. Making sure to visit your dentist every six months will allow problems like this to be caught before they progress.

While there are several reasons for a toothache, you should make an appointment with your general dentist at the first sign of pain. The earlier the problem is diagnosed, the more straightforward treatment will be.

If your tooth pain has become an infection, you will need root canal therapy to save the tooth.
