Many people go about their day-to-day lives without really considering the impact that certain activities can have on their teeth. It may surprise you to learn that 25% of Americans over the age of 60 are missing all of their teeth. Below are a few ways to make sure you’re caring for your teeth so that they can last a lifetime!
Sugar is the most harmful substance for your teeth. The bacteria that live in the mouth feed on sugar and then produce harmful acid that eats away at enamel and weakens teeth, causing tooth decay and dental cavities. This is especially true for sticky sugar such as taffy, jellybeans, and gummies.
All soda is terrible for our teeth, even sugar-free soda. This is because of the high levels of acid in soda. Another sugary, acidic beverage is fruit juice, especially the kind with added sugars. Lastly, alcohol is also highly acidic and will eat away at and damage the tooth enamel. If you do drink these beverages, make sure to rinse your mouth with water afterward to rinse away the sugar.
