Dental Cavities Occurring Between the Teeth

Dental cavities aren’t always accompanied by pain. In fact, if you wait until you’re experiencing pain, a simple filling procedure may have turned into a root canal! This is why regular dental appointments are so important. Of all dental cavities, the ones between the teeth may be the sneakiest. These cavities are known as interproximal cavities.

Interproximal Dental Cavities

Interproximal cavities are best detected with the use of a bite-wing X-Ray. If an interproximal dental cavity is caught early, it can be recalcified with fluoride gel. If the cavity has penetrated too far into the tooth enamel, the cavity will need a filling. If the cavity has reached into the pulp of the tooth, a dental crown or a root canal may be required to save the tooth.

Symptoms of an Interproximal Cavity

Below are a few symptoms that may point to the possibility that you’re suffering from an interproximal dental cavity:

  • Tooth sensitivity to especially sugary foods
  • Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold temperature
  • Pain or problems with chewing or biting

In the end, the best way to prevent all dental cavities is to practice good oral hygiene. This means brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing every day, and visiting the dentist every six months for a dental cleaning and an exam.
