The Differences Between Screwed-In and Cemented Dental Implants

Dental implants are the most permanent and reliable form of restoring missing or lost teeth. They have a very high success rate and, if you take good care of them, your dental implants can last a lifetime!

Implants are designed to look and feel like your natural teeth. There are many different types of dental implants for different circumstances. Implants are available in different, shapes and sizes, and can be used to replace a single tooth or to provide a multiple-tooth bridge. While the basic architecture of implants is the same, you have two options for attachment – screwed or cemented.

Screwed-in vs. Cemented Dental Implants

  • Screwed: The benefit of a screwed-in attachment is that it can fasten an artificial tooth to the implant without the need for cement. This allows for easy removal for repair or replacement if needed. The downside to a screwed-in attachment is that it may cause a cosmetic problem. Even though the access hole for the screw will be covered with a tooth-colored filling, it may still be a noticeably different shade from the rest of the attachment.
  • Cemented: An artificial tooth that is cemented to the implant won’t have this cosmetic issue that the screwed-in one might have and will look just like a natural tooth. But, unlike a screwed crown, removing a cemented crown for repair or replacement can be problematic. Also, in some cases, the cement can cause gum swelling and bone loss in patients who have particularly sensitive mouths.

No matter which option you choose, you’ll benefit from a dental implant. To learn more about dental implants and whether or not you are a good candidate for them, contact your general dentist for a checkup and a referral.
