Here’s What You Need to Know About Endodontics

People often get confused between dentists and endodontists. Although an endodontist is technically a dentist, a dentist isn’t always an endodontist.

Endodontics is a specialized field of dentistry. This means that an endodontist continued an extra two or three years of education to specialize in a specific area within dentistry.

A general dentist may recommend an endodontist when you have a severe oral health issue with your fibrous tissue, nerves, arterioles, venules, or lymphatic tissue.

Root Canals

The most common reason people visit an endodontist is to get a root canal. The purpose of endodontic therapy is to help a patient retain their original teeth, once the pulp has been harmed. It helps minimize damage to the tooth and tries to save as much of it as possible.

Although a root canal is not the most comfortable experience, modern technology has made it possible to be a relatively painless procedure. The area is numbed using local anesthesia to help minimize the pain during the root canal procedure.

You will experience mild soreness for a few days after the procedure, but it can be more comfortable with over-the-counter or prescription medicines.

Delaying or avoiding a root canal can cause the decay to spread, eventually cause you to lose your teeth. Therefore, if your dentist has recommended you to see an endodontist, find one immediately.
