History of Endodontics

Teeth and dental instruments

The practice of endodontics has been around for over centuries. In 1985, in Israel's Negev Desert, archeologists found a 2000-year-old expired Nabataen soldier with a one-10th of an inch bronze wire installed in the nerve cavity of one of the skull's teeth. The skull with a wire in its teeth offers us our first hint of endodontic treatment. There are many pieces of evidence from the first century A.D. until the 1600s that indicate the presence of endodontic treatments. The ancient treatment involved draining pulp chambers for relief and covering them with gold foil or asbestos protective coatings.

A root canal treatment is a treatment that demonstrates high innovation and a high comprehension of dental ailments. Archeologists accept the treatment of the 2000-year-old Nabataean soldier to have been practiced on by a Roman doctor. The Romans in the past have likewise been credited for the invention of dental crowns and dentures.

The Emergence of Endodontics

In the 17th century, the official appearance of Endodontics occurred. Since then, numerous advances, developments, and research has proceeded continuously, evolving the specialization.

In 1963, endodontics was perceived as the eighth dental forte by the American Dental Association.

With the ascent of the 20th century came the foundation of x-rays and anesthetics – what some may call "dentistry miracles." Endodontic treatments today are substantially safer, practical, and above all, more comfortable! Tooth extractions are no longer the solitary treatment for an infected pulp or abscess.

The advent of technology has made endodontic treatments reliable and effective to the fullest extent.
